Who Needs to Extend Their Visa?
Extending a visa in Thailand is one of the most common tasks for anyone staying longer than their initial permission to stay allows. Whether you arrived on a 60-day visa-exempt entry, a Tourist Visa (TR), a Non-Immigrant visa, or are renewing a long-stay Retirement or Marriage Visa — understanding exactly how the extension process works is essential to staying legally in the country.
The consequences of not extending — or missing your deadline — are severe. Thailand imposes automatic fines of ฿500 per day for overstaying, up to a maximum of ฿20,000, plus potential multi-year entry bans. These are enforced consistently and cannot be waived.
Who Can Extend Their Visa in Thailand
Extension rules vary significantly by visa type. Each category has different durations, fees, and eligibility requirements.

Step-by-Step Extension Process
Check Your Exact Expiry Date
Look at the stamp in your passport — not the visa sticker. The stamp shows your permission to stay end date.
Prepare All Documents
Assemble your passport, TM.7 form (pre-filled), TM.6 card, one photo, and any additional documents for your visa type.
Arrive at Immigration Early
Plan to arrive by 8:00am. Take a queue number at the door. You will be called to a counter where an officer reviews your documents.
Submit TM.7 Form & Documents
Hand over all documents at the counter. The officer checks completeness. If anything is missing, you may be turned away.

Wait for Stamp

Waiting until the last day
If the office is busy, you may not be processed before closing. Apply at least 7–14 days before expiry.
Missing the TM.6 departure card
The white card stapled in your passport on arrival is required for extensions. If lost, you must go to immigration to replace it before applying.
Going to the wrong office
Any immigration office in Thailand can process your extension — but verify opening hours in advance. Some tourist areas have seasonal closures.
Assuming approval is automatic
Officers can decline extensions if they believe you are using tourist entries to live in Thailand. Have a plausible reason for your extended stay.
Forgetting photocopies
Offices require copies of your passport photo page, visa page, and entry stamp. Some offices have a copy shop nearby, but don't rely on it.
Incorrect TM.7 form
Errors on the form cause delays or rejection. Fill in every field in English. Use the exact address from your TM.30 registration.
Leaving without a re-entry permit
Non-immigrant visa holders who exit Thailand without a re-entry permit have their visa cancelled immediately — even a valid extension is voided. Buy one before any international trip.
Confusing 90-day reporting with extension
The 90-day address report (TM.47) is a separate obligation from visa extension. Filing your 90-day report does not extend your visa. Both must be managed independently.
