What is the Thailand Tourist Visa?
Thailand welcomes millions of visitors each year across multiple entry categories. In 2025, Thailand offers four main routes for tourist and short-stay entry: Visa Exemption (free, 60 days for 60+ nationalities), Visa on Arrival (VOA) (for specific nationalities not on the exemption list), the Tourist Visa (TR) (pre-applied at an embassy, 60 days), and the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) — a long-stay option for remote workers valid for 5 years.
Each option has different eligibility rules, durations, extension possibilities, and costs. Choosing the wrong one — or misunderstanding your expiry date — can result in overstay fines starting at ฿500 per day. Types of Tourist Entry to Thailand (2026)
Visa Exemption (Free — 60 Days)
Citizens of over 60 countries can enter Thailand without a pre-arranged visa and receive 60 days permission to stay, stamped on arrival. This was updated from 30 days as part of Thailand's 2025 tourism promotion policy.

Visa on Arrival (VOA — 15 Days)
Nationals of approximately 19 countries not on the visa-exempt list can apply for a Visa on Arrival at designated Thai international airports and border checkpoints. It gives 15 days permission to stay and can be extended once for 7 days (฿1,900) at the airport immigration counter before departure.

Tourist Visa (TR) — Embassy Application
The Tourist Visa (TR) is a sticker visa applied for in advance at a Thai embassy or consulate. It gives 60 days permission to stay, extendable by 30 days (total 90 days). Available in three formats:

Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) — Digital Nomads
Launched in 2024 for remote workers, freelancers, and digital nomads. The DTV is a 5-year multiple-entry visa allowing stays of up to 180 days per entry. It is the most flexible long-stay option for people who work remotely from outside Thailand.

Tourist Visa Requirements
Requirements apply to the Tourist Visa (TR) embassy application. Visa-exempt nationals need only a valid passport and return ticket at the border.
Passport Validity
Valid for at least 6 months beyond intended entry date. Minimum 2 blank pages.
Return/Onward Ticket
Confirmed flight ticket showing you will leave Thailand within your permitted stay.
Proof of Funds
Bank statement showing ฿20,000 per person (approx. $550 USD) or ฿40,000 per family.
Accommodation Proof
Hotel booking confirmation or host invitation letter for at least the initial days of your stay.

Step-by-Step Application Process
Check Your Entry Option
Confirm whether your nationality qualifies for visa exemption (mfa.go.th). If so, no pre-application is needed — you simply arrive at the airport.
Choose Visa Type
Decide between visa-exempt entry, VOA, Tourist Visa (TR), or DTV based on your stay length, nationality, and whether you plan to work remotely.
Apply Online or at Embassy
For TR visas: submit your application at the nearest Thai embassy with all required documents. For e-Visa countries: apply online at thaievisa.go.th. Allow 2–5 business days.
Prepare Documents
Passport, application form, two passport photos, return ticket, hotel confirmation, bank statement. Have both originals and copies ready.
Arrive in Thailand
At the immigration checkpoint, present your passport (and TR visa sticker if applicable). Complete the TM.6 arrival card. Keep the departure card — it's required when you leave.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Overstaying — even by 1 day
The fine starts the moment your permission to stay expires: ฿500/day. Over 90 days triggers a re-entry ban. There is no grace period.
Assuming visa-exempt = Tourist Visa
A visa exemption and a Tourist Visa are different. Visa-exempt entries cannot always be converted to long-stay visas inside Thailand.
Forgetting the extension is once-only
Many visitors assume they can extend multiple times. You cannot — one 30-day extension is the limit per entry.
Leaving without a re-entry permit
If you hold a non-immigrant visa and leave Thailand without a re-entry permit, your visa is cancelled. For tourist entries, no re-entry permit is needed — each entry is fresh. See the re-entry permit guide for full rules.
Working on a tourist entry
All forms of work — employed, freelance, or remote for a foreign employer — are illegal without a work permit. The DTV is the legal option for remote workers.
Missing your expiry stamp date
Your permission to stay end date is stamped in your passport — not when the visa sticker expires. These are two different dates. Track the stamp, not the sticker.
